You've got free space immediately have the partition you're try to resize which is good. It makes things much easier. Still you should backup before doing anything. You'll want to make sure you have parted on your system, then boot to single user (not strictly necessary, you could just go to a vt, login as root, umount /home and carry on). Use parted to increase the size of /dev/hda6 as desired, then 'resize2fs /dev/hda6' and you should be done.
