I'm thinking of upgrading my i686 system (Intel

better
speed and performance.
I am using DDR RAM, but I can see a definite
improvement in performance from 256 MB to 1G. I did
not try intermediate values. It's pretty cheap these
days. There should be many people upgrading from SDRAM
to boards that support DDR, and who may lend you some
of their old RAM for such a trial.

I upgraded recently from 512 to 1GB, but I'm using ddr also. To my
surprise, I had a bit of performance increase, really. I mean, I always
use 'free' to check out mem usage, and I was using very few swap, if
any, before the upgrade. Now, I didn't see swap usage at all. I upgraded
for better video and photo editing.
You'll see better performance when opening and working with lots of
programs together. Daily life will remain more or less the same.
