For an external modem that depends on where you attach it.
ttyS0 => COM1 in Windows-speak and ttyS1 => COM2.
For an internal modem, my experience is that it is seen as
ttyS2 (if you have two serial ports). wvdialconf from the
wvdial package has so far done a good job for me in 
automatically detecting modems - it scans all ports.

apt-get update
apt-get install libc6

should show you the size of the package plus all others apt
pulls in as well.
