Have you tried "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg"? It worked great for me when xorg packages 1st landed into ustable. I had problems after installing packages and changing X server, but after reconfiguring, it's working flawlessly... For the gdm, I have no idea, but you should try startx 1st, and only if it works, then try *dm (wdm, xdm, gdm, etc.)... -- Javier-Elias Vasquez-Vivas
