solution found - but original problem still exists. I partitioned hdb and hdc with a single partition for the entire disk and then did: pvcreate /dev/hdb1 pvcreate /dev/hdc1
and then vgcreate VG /dev/hdb1 /dev/hdc1 mythtv has started to fill up the new space.
