That's console tools (/etc/init.d/console-screen.sh) changing the font. You can try to change it's behaviour by editing the /etc/console-tools/config.
I think either disabling (commenting out) all the APP_CHARSET_MAP entries or changing the SCREEN_FONT could change it. I haven't tried it myself, so I can't help you more, sorry. There is some docs in /usr/share/doc/console-tools/ HTH Simo -- :r ~/.signature
