The hardware detection must be quite different and there appears to be an entire abstraction layer, unionfs, that is present in Knoppix but not Debian. In Knoppix, /UNIONFS/ appears to be the root of the file system and the HDD is accessed as /UNIONFS/dev/hda1/.
