Or one can use the premade binary-packages at debian-unofficial.org:

deb http://ftp.debian-unofficial.org/debian sarge main contrib non-free

apt-get update
apt-get install sun-j2se5.0-jre

or

apt-get install sun-j2se5.0-jdk
