No better, I fear. This is now looking a more difficult problem than I thought it would be. Seemingly I can still ping the desktop from the laptop but not the reverse. Ifconfig on the laptop now shows an inet address of 192.168.0.3 for eth1, which seems odd; but pinging that doesn't work either.
