Did you tell mutt about the list in your .muttrc? I don't use mutt
anymore but I used to place a list of mailing lists in my .muttrc and it
then would fill in the correct address with 'L' command

subscribe debian-user@lists.debian.org 
subscribe screen-users@gnu.org
