I once rescued a hard disk (the drive, not the data) bu doing a low-level format from an option in the BIOS, I believe (actually, I'm not quite sure after all these years-- it might have been from a diagnostic floppy from the drive manufacturer). When a fan fails, things overheat, have random problems, and, when it went on too long, I lost an expensive video card and a motherboard.
