I rebooted into the old 2.2 kernel, and installed these from the sarge distro.

After the reboot into sarge, everything worked, without my having to lift a finger. Great!

I guess my only wonderment is why these utilities aren't installed by default.

Oh well... once they were installed, they did the trick.
