I used to have this problem after I installed sarge laong ago.  I just
learned to run alsaconf frwquently.  Then on day, after a routine
upgrade, the problem went away.  I never found out what the problem was,
or how to fix it.

But I've never got my USB port working properly.  I suspect hardware.
If I had a choice I'd rather have USB and occasionally run alsaconf!
