If my guess is correct, everything is allright except that you need to
configure your X with proper driver. To do this you need to tell us
whether you are using xorg or xfree86. Assuming that you are using xorg
packages do
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
if you are using xfree86, then I believe the command is
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
