If you want the Gnome desktop features, the icons, the trash, etc...
then your choices are to use a background or use a solid color.

Otherwise you can set it so nautilus doesn't draw the desktop leaving it
to the window manager or other programs to create any "desktop" stuff.

If you use the gconf editor you can find the nautilus setting to disable
drawing of the desktop.

Even easier install gtweakui and run the gtweakui-nautilus utility and
disable the option to 'use nautilus to draw the desktop'.
