If you read 'man dircolors' it says that the default is a 'precompiled database' which can be shown by doing: dircolors --print-database I suggest capturing the output of the above and then modifying it to your requirements, then run stick the results in a file, e.g ~/.mycolours Then put: eval `dircolors ~/.mycolours` into ~/.bashrc or something like that ...
