OK. Problem was that kmail ceased to function in the current Sid KDE so I had to install KDE3.4.2 locally. Their "konstruct" utitlity is not flawless but makes the process most painless--and it leaves the Sid installation intact. Once 3.4.2 is working in Sid, the paths can be changed back and the local installtion deleted.
