edit /etc/inittab and change your default run level from 5 to 3
this way you boot to a text login but keep your networking stuff.  When
you need/want to use 'x', then just type init 5 at command line and it
will take you to your display manager and let you login to whatever 'x'
environment you have installed...  KDE, GNOME, WindowMaker..
