I haven't followed all of this thread that closely, but it sounds like WinXP 
is not set up to share the internet connection.  Have you tried running the 
Network Setup Wizard in the Conrol Panel an checking the Internet Connection 
Sharing Status?

Apologies if this has been done, or already suggested
