Apologies for this simple question but again I've been unable to find the
answer at debian.org - unless of course the absence of any details about low
RAM systems means I'm out of luck.
1) Install woody and upgrade
OR
2) Boot DSL (Damn Small Linux) and do a chroot install
OR
3) Install DSL (IIRC, it is Debian based)

1. nah - I had such pain with big upgrades in the first place that I
started from scratch when I moved from woody to sarge
2 & 3. chrooting looks interesting (not to say something new to learn).
Thanks for bringing my attention to DSL. Yes it is debian based except
for X which I'm not interested in anyway. While looking it up I also

I'm still unimpressed though that debian seem to have abandoned those
with bottom end hardware by implementing a no-other-choice (if very
clever) installer that requires a large amount of memory to run. The
reason I chose debian over any other distro years ago was because I
could install it on basic laptops with half a dozen floppies. But I
digress...
