Somehow I've lost my sound. It used to be there, but not any more.

dmesg shows:

------------------------------------------------------------
via82cxxx: Six channel audio available
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:00:11.5 to 64
ac97_codec: AC97 Audio codec, id: VIA112 (Unknown)
via82cxxx: board #1 at 0xEB00, IRQ 193
------------------------------------------------------------

which looks to me like the kernel found the on-board sound.

But catting /dev/sndstat gives:

------------------------------------------------------------
Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v1.0.8 emulation code)
Kernel: Linux mnr 2.6.11-1-k7 #1 Mon Jun 20 21:26:23 MDT 2005 i686
Config options: 0

Installed drivers:
Type 10: ALSA emulation

Card config:
--- no soundcards ---

Audio devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Midi devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Timers:
7: system timer

Mixers: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG
------------------------------------------------------------

Where is the config file that needs to be changed?
