what i do to run sawfish instead of metacity is : # aptitude install sawfish-gnome+ metacity_ also if that command exits sucessfully, but you dont have a window manager running (ie. gconf got munged) then you can add sawfish to the list of startup programs under "preferences -> session -> startup programs".
