You need to compile the kernel with _all_ ACPI options enabled (I only say that because I neglected to do that the first time and thought I'd enabled ACPI :) and then you need to install acpid which provides some utilities which actually talk ACPI with the kernel. I now, after exiting X gracefully, just hit the power switch and power down cleanly.
