I've noticed that the memory load applet doesn't correctly show disk cache since the 2.4 kernels most of the time. I expect it's a known bug, but haven't looked into it very deeply. You would have to pull over to the side of the road, close all of the car windows, shut it off, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue.
