Both squirrelmail and imp are installed on several machines in our
department, but they are used infrequently. The last time I used them
was in March when they worked fine; a few days ago, I was unable to
login on any installation with either squirrelmail or imp.
One setup is sid with
squirrelmail 1.2.6-1
apache 1.3.24-3
php4 4.2.1-2
imp 2.2.6-5
uw-imapd-ssl 2001adebian-6
while the others are woody based:
squirrelmail 1.2.5-1
apache 1.3.24-3
php4 4.1.2-4
imp 2.2.6-5
uw-imapd-ssl 2001adebian-6
The symptoms are the same on all systems.
With squirrelmail, the login page comes up, and when the user submits
their data one of three things happen:
1. It makes it to the redirect.php page (which appears blank)
2. It spins its wheels for a long time and ends with the (php) error
message: Fatal Error: Allowed memory size of nnnnn bytes exhausted in
/usr/share/squirrelmail/functions/imap_general.php on line 141
followed by a second such line.
3. A browser error saying the redirect.php page could not load.
With imp, the login is rejected immediately saying that:
"Either you have logged in incorrectly or your login has expired. Please
login again."
At least with imp, the response is immediate. I have adjusted the size
of the memory variables in php.ini and the timeout limits, but this is
not really the problem, since I have tried this with accounts having
very little mail.
Cookies are accepted and registered with the browser
Neither program actually gets to the point of validating the login since
the responses are the same for valid and invalid passwords.
I have tried to track this on both the debian-user list and the
squirrelmail user site, but nobody has recently reported this behaviour.
BTW, the imap authentication is fine. Both netscape and evolution can
access the accounts without a problem.
So my guess is php is at fault, but I am at a loss for any more ideas on
how to proceed.
