With XF4.1.0 you don't need xfs, X can handle truetype on its own. All you 
have to do is
 * enter the font directory in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 (or whatever)
 * run ttmkfdir with the appropriate options to create the fonts.dir and 
fonts.scale (same content, you can make one a symlink to another)
This is what works fine for me.

So basically, that's what I did. Try to get rid of all varieties of xfs, 
perhaps it's messing with something. Otherwise I'll pass the question on ;-)
