I'm not sure what's going on, but maybe it has something to do with gnome 'restoring' the last session? What happens if you kill all xterms and then say 'restore session'? This doesn't explain the incrementing numbers though. Maybe that's got something to do with a .xsession file containing a line that fires up a xterm (but then, that should be the same for every time you restart a X-session). I'm really puzzled....
