Thanks to Richard Eckart's detective work, we now have a workaround for people who can't start Openoffice.org on a machine running Gnome and the Sawfish window manager. This is a problem which has been reported by many different users, and is not specific to any distribution.
Symptoms: On trying to start OOo, the splash screen appears, and, depending on the speed of your machine and the --purge-delay option to gnome-session, a window may appear briefly, but then it closes. For certain machines, opening a document and pressing keys in it before it closes will keep it up, too. Workaround: simply unset SESSION_MANAGER before starting openoffice. You can also workaround the problem by increasing the --purge-delay parameter to gnome-session. For more information and updates, see issue #4494 in Openoffice.org issuezilla and Gnome bug #81762: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=4494 http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=81762 (This problem, and it's workaround, is identical for Opera users.)
