A card reader can definitely be more convenient, and they also allow you to access your images without running down the camera battery. I started using a card reader (San Disk SDDR-31 Compact Flash reader) after finding gphoto2 quite useless with my Canon Powershot G2 (which insisted the camera wasn't there even though generic USB tools said it was). I'm not sure that "nearly all" card readers work under Linux -- I would assume that all USB Mass Storage-compatible readers work, but some others are known NOT to work, including at least one San Disk model (so look specifically for the SDDR-31 if you want one). Whether "nearly all" card readers are Mass Storage-compatible or otherwise supported under Linux, I do not know. Craig
