These days I tend to use aptitude as my standard dpkg/APT front-end. Current aptitude (possibly only the version in unstable) has a feature to check this on its own. If you type 'M' into aptitude, the package on the current line will be marked with an 'A' (and possibly also marked for removal). That mark means that the package has been Automatically installed, and so it will automatically get removed if aptitude notices that no other installed packages depend on it.
