I had the same experience and was on the list probably last week with queries on the same lines. As obvious went through the docs now and added certain sections to the XF86Config-4 file, ran dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and still got X working perfectly. For the sake of checking I chose nv as the driver and had the actual driver set elsewhere. It worked like a charm.
