packages made by make-kpkg dont mess with lilo.conf unless you tell it
to.  It alters the sym-links /vmlinuz and /vmlinuz.old when you do a
dpkg -r it moves what was on /vmlinuz.old to /vmlinuz and it leaves
/vmlinuz.old empty pointing to nothing.  You may have to repair that
dangling sym-link, but that should be it if your lilo.conf is set-up
correctly in the first place.
