kdm has a nice way of doing this automatically if you are using X, but
if your not, I think there is a key binding to ctr-alt-delete that
allows you to gracefully reboot.  There was a message about this a few
days ago.  Apparently you have to change shutdown -r to shutdown -h
somewhere.  I forget, maybe you could check the archives or wait for
someone more knowledgeable to reply.
