I think the last response missed the question.
Check out IRC servers. www.dal.net has a good one. There is "ircd" in
the deb distribution as well.

Sure ... you can run gaim (AOL Instant messanger client) on any linux as
a client to the AOL servers, and there is jabber (www.jabber.org) which
has a free server you can run yourself and clients for all kinds of OS's
and devices - plus gateways to other messenger servers.
