Many people don't routinely cc the poster of a question unless asked. The convention on most Debian lists is to reply to the list; if you want copies by private mail, ask for them and/or set the Mail-Followup-To: header. Is that what you mean - you aren't subscribed to debian-user and were surprised not to get copies of replies by private mail?
