once you have your usb kernel support (usbcore and usb-mouse i think), you made need to to a ./Makedev for "mice" which'll be created in /dev/input. Then you need to tell gpm / X (i also had to tell them to use imps2 instead of ps2 as protocol - but I think that's for the wheel ?). It's been a while (so I'm not 100% sure about the names), but that's the way it worked for me.
