ifconfig is a low-level tool you can use to bring an interface up or down, set its address/netmask/broadcast address, etc. ifup/ifdown are higher-level tools that parse /etc/network/interfaces and run ifconfig (and possibly other things) based on that. > how can ifconfig bring up eth0 use dhcp? It can't. ifup can, given a correct stanza in /etc/network/interfaces. You can use ifconfig to bring up eth0 with no address, and then use a DHCP client separately.
