The problem I had was on Solaris "meta" is the black diamond key next to alt. The PC has no such key. If "alt" is sent to Solaris, so what? Solaris doesn't treat "alt" as meta. | Last resort, pressing escape and then the character you want will work | all the time. So, if you want M-f (meta forward) you can either hit | ALT-f or ESC f. Yeah, but that is part of the complaint -- pressing ESC repeatedly (if there is more than one M- key) for each command. I have given emacs a fair chance, and it even got its chance before vim did.
