apt-get is a great tool -- *if* you know the exact name of the package
you're looking for.  It really isn't a good choice for the only tool
you ever you to manipulate packages.  In current unstable, I like
aptitude as a reasonable text-based front-end; you also might try the
oft-maligned but functional dselect.
