I've used Xinerama before myself, with two seperate cards. I didn't have to run them at the same resolution. One was 800x600, the other was 1152x864. Worked just fine :) I have heard a lot of people say the same thing as you, though (that you have to run both heads at the same resolution). Can you point to a doc where you read this?
