Could be a couple things...the /etc/passwd file on the client machine needs "+::::::" put in it in order to recognize the NIS server accounts. Also, I seem to recall that only uids > 1000 are allowed by default when using NIS, in Debian, but it's been a while and I can't test this anymore. I also noticed a HOW-TO in /usr/doc/HOWTO that might help too.
