I have a serious problem that I think is with xfree86
4.1.0. I boot into x-windows, KDE or gnome and can
only use the mouse for about 1 minute before it stops.
The mouse locks up as I move across window or applet
boundaries.

I would suggest that you attempt
to use GPM's "repeater" protocol. Edit /etc/gpm.conf and set
"repeat_type" to "raw". Then edit your XF86Config-4, and make it use
/dev/gpmdata as the mouse device instead of /dev/ttyS0.
That's it - now the mouse works great!
Thanks to all who replied.
This debian-user list is amazing,
Twice I have posted a question and
received precisely the right answer in just one hour!
