What terminal emulator are you using? Almost all terminal emulators have the option of configuring what colour is displayed(with very fine granularity, for instance, using RGB colour codes) when an application requests "blue"(or red, or green, or whatever). I prefer this method over changing what colour Mutt requests. For many terminal emulators, four or five colours are difficult to see using the defaults.
