I believe there can be lots of causes for this. In my case, this happened when I tried putting in memory that wasn't compatible with my computer. This problem also showed up when I tried to compile a kernel, as the compile would fail, usually with all sorts of pager request problems, etc. Sorry I don't have the exact error messages right where I can find them. Anyway, this all stopped when I changed my memory, but as I said, there could be lots of other reasons.
