| 'e2fsck /dev/hda1' from the shell prompt I get the message
None of those devices are currently in use because you have booted the
installer. The installer uses a RAMDISK to store / and doesn't use
more memory than is physically present. It can't, because it is the
installer and thus by definitiion isn't an installed system.
