I seriously suggest you upgrade to the current Debian "Stable" version (Potato) at least and then try to re-install the packages you mentioned. You will probably save yourself a LOT of trouble in the long run. The "clue" for me is the message from Star Office. The glibc version 2.1 was introduced when POTATO came out in Aug of 1999. There has been a lot of modernization since then. In fact, in a few months you will probably be TWO versions out of date when "Woody" is released! If you have a fairly fast connection (dsl / cable modem) with the Internet, you "should" be able to upgrade by pointing your system at a Debian "Stable" ftp site and using "apt-get dist-upgrade". It will d/l about 250 new packages. If you don't have a fast connection, then ordering a CD from one of the suppliers listed on the Debian site and doing a new install is probably the best bet.... it will cost about $10-$15 U.S. to get one.
