Ok, lets not jump the gun here. First of all...

    1. what is your soundcard?
    2. have you loaded the appropriate module for your card?

for example, I have a SB Live! Value card, which uses the emu10k1 module,
and uses ac97_codec as a base. So, when I do an lsmod, I see this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] msoulier]$ lsmod
Module Size Used by Not tainted
tdfx 34904 0
ide-scsi 7360 0
scsi_mod 48636 1 [ide-scsi]
parport 12896 0 (unused)
emu10k1 50336 0
ac97_codec 9504 0 [emu10k1]

If you know that your setup is correct, then try this:

    1. Kill esd. It sucks anyway.
    2. If you've added yourself to the audio group, make sure that it's
available from your current shell. Either newgrp or logout and login again
completely. Confirm that you are a member with the groups command.
    3. From that shell, start xmms. Use the libOSS plugin for output to
/dev/dsp.
    4. Check the permissions on /dev/dsp. They should be like this

[EMAIL PROTECTED] msoulier]$ ls -l /dev/dsp
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 3 Nov 30 2000 /dev/dsp

    5. For volume control, do the same with /dev/mixer.
    6. Now try to play something. Look in /var/log/messages for any errors if
it doesn't work.

    Mike
