If you just want an easy-to-install distro to get your feet wet, Mandrake.
If you want to run what "everyone" else is running, RedHat.
If you want to learn and become proficient, and if you want a stable and
easy-to-maintain distro, or if you lean toward a more pure "Free"
philosophy, Debian.
Personally, if you can stand the learning curve, I recommend Debian,
both for its philosophy and for its ease-of-maintenance.
