I am not sure which file one needs to view to see the kernel's output on starting up - sorry , but you can stop the kernel outputting messages to the screen by pressing ctrl+s and then when you want to see more output press ctrl+q. Repeat the above as much as you feel necessary. No doubt someone with a better memory than me will answer your original question. Maybe a search using google, for instance, would be a good idea.
