Here's a note-to-myself I found in my xmms sources: We were using the aalsa (note 2 'a's) plugin into kernel 2.4.14. This broke with kernel 2.4.15-greased-turkey. The alsa (note 1 'a') plugin only works with alsa 0.9, which appears to be a devel release.
